Yellow Fever vaccinations for Ecuador visitors

The Ecuadorian Health Ministry is recommending travellers get yellow fever vaccinations if they intend to visit certain parts of the country.

Travellers to the provinces of Morono-Santiago, Napo, Orellana, Pastaza, Zamora-Chinchipe and Sucumbios in the Amazon basin should all take note of this advice.

Yellow fever is a viral haemorrhagic illness that exists in many African and South American countries and is transmitted via the bit of Aedes mosquitoes.

The World Health Organisation estimates there are 200,000 estimated cases of yellow fever (with 30,000 deaths) per year.

There is no specific treatment and vaccination is highly recommended as a preventive measure.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises people to seek appropriate medical advice before travelling to Ecuador.

She's beautiful, and clearly the bike rides are keeping her in shape as the CNN.com photo shows, but janaki Purushe is taken. Her public Facebook profile shows her holding up her left hand, displaying what looks like an engagement ring on her ring finger. Purushe is a 2007 Maryland graduate.

In addition, Janashe Purushe has a LiveJournal blog where she excitedly posted a screenshot of her photo on CNN.com with the headline "IM ON THE FRONT PAGE OF CNN". She should realize this may be just the tip of the iceberg.

Orlando Brown gone missing!

Orlando Brown, the 20-year-old actor who appears on the television show "That's So Raven," was reported missing after leaving his manager's house early Tuesday morning, People reported.

Brown left the Studio City, Calif., house at 10:20 a.m. to make a fast trip to a 7-Eleven that was within walking distance, but has not been heard from since.

He didn't show up any of his scheduled meetings or appointments Tuesday in preparation for a photo shoot Wednesday, his publicist, Elayne Rivers, told People. Brown is not known to be out of touch for long, she added.

The actor's close friend and manager Ricky Romance has reportedly been posting MySpace bulletins and calling local hospitals in hope someone knows where Brown is.

Brown was in the talks to have his own "That's So Raven" spin-off, as well as release a second album featuring tracks with several top artists, People reported.

"That's So Raven" stopped production last year after a four-year run. Brown played the character Eddie Thomas on the show.

He's made appearances in a number of television shows and movies, such as "Family Matters," "The Jamie Foxx Show" and "Nash Bridges."

There's been a lot of talk on the Web this weekend that Dr. Phil McGraw is having marital problems with wife, Robin McGraw.

The report first surfaced from the Globe's Website which said:

"Dr. Phil Divorce Blow-up! TV shrink Dr. Phil makes a living dishing out advice to others - but now, he may be in need of some himself to save his own marriage - as insiders reveal he's flying into jealous rages over his wife Robin. GLOBE's sources bare the shocking details of Dr. Phil's marriage crisis."

We dug out our list of contacts and found a number to a close friend of Robin McGraw who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity.

We noted the GLOBE's story and immediately her initial response was laughter, "Are you kidding me? Now that's funny." The friend then telephoned the couple and confirmed that the divorce claims are false.

Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw have been married for 31 years. The couple has two sons Jay, 28, and Jordan, 21.

The teen accused of beheading and mutilating a man in an alleged murder plot that has been described by Wayne County's prosecutor as a "thrill killing" was only acting in self-defense, according to his lawyer.

Jean Pierre Orlewicz, 18, never planned or even intended to kill Daniel Sorensen, but the 26-year-old bouncer from River Rouge pulled a gun on Orlewicz who fought back, his defense attorney told jurors today at the opening of the trial in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Panic followed Sorensen's death from a dozen stab wounds on Nov. 7, the lawyer said: The sawing off of his head with a hacksaw, burning his fingertips with a blowtorch in an effort to make him unidentifiable, calling a friend to help clean the murder scene, setting fire to the torso and dumping it in a vacant lot and tossing the severed head into the Rouge River.

Teen lifestyles of today -- its music, movies, video games and the Internet -- all contributed to the decision to hide the body instead of calling police, defense lawyer Joseph Niskar told the jury of 10 men and four women.

But Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Robert Moran said statements and the expected testimony of Orlewicz's co-defendant, Alexander Letkemann, 18, of Westland, and others will show Sorensen was lured into a well-planned death trap.

Moran said the weekend before Sorensen's death, Orlewicz told friends who will testify at the trial, "I wish I could get away with murder," and, "I don't like Dan. Maybe I should just kill him."

Letkemann, who told detectives that Orlewicz jumped the larger man from behind and slit his throat, pleaded guilty on April 1 to a reduced charge of second degree murder. The plea-bargain to testify against Orlewicz could get Letkemann out of prison after 20 to 30 years. Letkemann had faced the same charges of first degree murder and disinterment and mutilation of a corpse as Orlewicz and the same possible sentence of life without parole.

According to both sides, the two teens had linked with the older man in a strong-arm plot to extort money from another teen who had recently come into an inheritance. Sorensen, who has a criminal record and a self-promoted reputation for violence, had told friends about a plan to get about $3,000 in concert with his friend "JP."

The prosecution claimed Monday that the extortion target was a ruse to lure Sorensen to his death.

According to the defense, Sorensen got angry at Orlewicz and Letkemann when the extortion target failed to show for the meeting in Orlewicz's grandfather's Canton Township garage. The place had been prepared with windows covered, tarps spread on the floor and knives, a saw and cleaning materials ready.

"We are hearing some of these statements for the first time today," Niskar told jurors about his client who has remained silent since two days after Sorensen's death when police searched the room in his parent's upscale Plymouth Township home and found the victim's .38 caliber revolver.

Orlewicz also faces a charge of felony murder because it is alleged he told Sorensen to bring his gun to the meeting, and then stole it during the commission of the slaying.

Niskar accused the prosecution of wearing blinders to the truth and "flexing their charging muscles" in singling out Orlewicz while offering deals that have convinced the others to "change their stories."

"You are here because the prosecutor is able to craft and direct the evidence any way they feel fit," Niskar said.

Moran warned jurors that Letkemann, "will give you the inside version of the plan It's not going to be pleasant testimony. It's going to be gruesome and disgusting."

Artie Lange quits Howard Stern Show ?

Howard Stern Show fixture Artie Lange walked out of the studio after an argument and subsequent outburst at his personal assistant on the air.

Lange, who became a part of the show's daily routine in October of 2001, was spotted disputing with his assistant in the hallways off the air. When it was brought up to Stern, he asked the assistant Teddy to come into the studio and discuss the situation on the air.

Lange began to express his disdain for his assistant of nearly two years because of recent money issues. Teddy retorted by implying there's more to the job than meets the eye.

The two are slated to travel to Amsterdam this evening and the squabble began over setting up Lange's travel accommodations. However, the in-studio dispute quickly escalated into a discussion about how much Lange finances Teddy, who is affectionately called "Teddy Microphone" around the studio.

As the argument continued, Lange became enraged and physically lashed out at Teddy, but the physical confrontation was apparently defused by other members in the studio.

When Lange returned, he said Teddy would be "dead" had he reached him and he would be in jail.

Stern then expressed his feelings on the situation, saying he cannot condone Lange's actions. The comedian, who has had a similar outburst on the air in the past, said he cannot guarantee he can refrain from acting out in the future. Upon hearing that, Stern said he cannot have Lange around with the potential of such actions looming.

Artie then offered his resignation; Stern accepted, but told Lange to leave and cool off. Just before Lange left he told Stern: "I'm not a good person ... I gotta leave ... I love you"

Teddy returned to the studio several minutes later and said there was overreacting from everyone, but did not downplay the seriousness of the situation.

Show producer Gary Dell'Abate came in to analyze the situation, but he and Stern admitted they "did not know what to make of it all."

Stern does not host a live show on Fridays and the crew is on vacation next week.

Chiari Malformation student Kati looks towards graduation

Three years ago, honor roll student Kati Wetch went from basketball star to being bound to the couch in her Laurel home. Kati has Chiari Malformation, a genetic condition affecting the brain. And with May quickly approaching, 18-year-old Kati wants to sit with her class at graduation. But that desire is causing lots of problems.

After being diagnosed with rare Chiari Malformation a few years ago, Kati's life changed forever. "It's horrible because I was an honor student, a 3.8, 4.0 student going from sport to sport to sport," she said. "Now, nothing. Chiari's taken my life away."

With Chiari Malformation, the base of the skull doesn't contain the base of the brain. That can cause debilitating headaches, dizzy spells, and sometimes, even disrupts vision and speech. While living with Chiari is a daily struggle, Kati wants one thing.

"All I want to do is sit with my class and walk with my class. I don't care if they go on stage and say I don't have a high school diploma." But because she's several credits short, the Laurel Board of Education is denying her request. And Kati is heartbroken.

"I didn't ask to be sick. All I'm doing is asking to walk across the stage with my class. And what's wrong with that?" The school board said the ruling is a matter of policy. According to item 24-16 in the Laurel Public Schools handbook, "a student's right to participate in the commencement exercises of the graduating class at Laurel High School is an earned right. Participation in this ceremony is reserved for those members of the graduating class who have completed all of the state and local requirements for graduation before the date of the ceremony."

While the district has said it's sticking to protocol, a group of concerned citizens in Laurel has gathered more than 200 signatures in Kati's favor. The school board says they'll take up the issue again in a few weeks.

B-1 bomber catches fire in Qatar

U.S. B-1 bomber caught fire after landing at an air base in Qatar on Friday but the crew escaped without injury, the Air Force said.

Fire erupted as the plane taxied after landing at al Udeid Air Base around 1:10 p.m. EDT (1710 GMT) after what the Air Force described as "a ground incident."

"The crew evacuated the aircraft and is safe. The fire was contained," the Air Force said in a statement.

A board of inquiry has been appointed to investigate.

Earlier, a U.S. defense official said the B-1 had crashed and that the cause was unknown. The official was responding to report on Qatar-based Al Jazeera television that said the plane was a B-52.

The B-1 is a long-range bomber aircraft capable of flying intercontinental missions without refueling and is able to penetrate sophisticated defensive networks.

Pirates take over cruiser ship in Gulf of Aden

Pirates seized control of a French cruise ship carrying 30 crew members Friday in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia, the French Foreign Ministry and the ship's owner said.

Attackers stormed the three-mast Le Ponant as it returned without passengers from the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, toward the Mediterranean Sea, said officials with French maritime transport company CMA-CGM.

The corporate officials said they were in close contact with the French Foreign Ministry, which said in a statement that a cruise boat and its crew had been hit by a pirate attack.

The ship was in the high seas in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean, the ministry said. At least some of the crew members are French, it said.

According to the company's Web site, the 88-meter (288-f00t) boat features four decks, two restaurants, and indoor and outdoor luxury lounges. It can hold up to 64 passengers.

Pirates seized more than two dozen ships off the Somali coast last year.

The U.S. Navy has led international patrols to try to combat piracy in the region. Last year, the guided missile destroyer USS Porter opened fire to destroy pirate skiffs tied to a Japanese tanker.

Wracked by more than a decade of violence and anarchy, Somalia does not have its own navy, and a transitional government formed in 2004 with U.N. help has struggled to assert control.

The International Maritime Bureau, which tracks piracy, said in its annual report earlier this year that global pirate attacks rose 10 percent in 2007, marking the first increase in three years.

Cantaloupe recall because of salmonella contamination

The FDA has issued a recall for all cantaloupes from a Honduran manufacturer as they believe the fruit may be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella outbreaks have been reported in 16 states. Those states are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

The melons are believed to have come from Agropecuaria and Montelibano. The United States government is seeking to ban all imports of the melons coming from those areas.

Grocers have been advised to pull the recalled melons off their shelves. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning are nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

Man rapes 93-year old woman

In Mesa, Arizona, a 28-year Peter Cupis was arrested for raping 93-year old woman. Woman activated her medical alert bracelet to summon help from her family, police said.

Anton Corbijn is something of a renaissance man. Having begun his career as a photographer, he has branched out into graphic design and directing music videos and feature films. Corbijn was in Moscow this week to present an exhibition of photos, titled "Four Perspectives of Anton Corbijn," which opens Friday at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

The exhibition is part of the International Month of Photography in Moscow "Photobiennale-2008," which brings together the work of top international photographers -- including Ralph Gibson, Andreas Gursky and the legendary photographic cooperative "Magnum Photos" -- at locations across Moscow.

Corbijn was also in town to support the local release of his first feature film, "Control," an award-winning biographical drama about Ian Curtis, the iconic singer of British band Joy Division. Curtis killed himself in 1980 and the band split, leaving a legacy of subtle musical influence.

Corbijn, 52, was born in the small town of Strijen in the Netherlands. He started photographing musicians in 1972, using a grainy all-purpose black-and-white film called Tri-X. In 1979, enthralled by the innovative music emanating from England by bands such as Joy Division, he moved to across the Channel.

7.2-magnitude earthquake hits China!

BEIJING — A major earthquake struck western China early Friday, but there are no initial reports of casualties.

The 7.2 magnitude quake hit at 6:33 a.m. local time, about 225 kilomtres southeast of the city of Hotan in Xinjiang province according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A spokesman for China's Earthquake Administration said it was a 7.3 magnitude quake.

He stated there are no immediate reports of injuries and the area is sparsely populated.

USGS geophysicist Dale Grant described the area as "very seismically active" but said Friday's temblor was the biggest there on record.

Xinjiang is a predominantly Muslim region with a culture that is distinctly different from that of China's ethnic Han majority.

Third grader Carolyn Klamm’s original composition, “Alleluia,” took first place in the K-5 category of the Creating Original Music Project at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The program provides K-12 students in Missouri schools the opportunity to write original works in a variety of musical styles. Carolyn was invited to perform her original piece at a music festival at the university recently.

North Kansas City High School

Senior Emma Shankland is one of 10 metro-area students to be named a KMBC-TV and Hy-Vee scholar athlete. She receives a $1,000 scholarship.

Shankland recently finished in seventh place in the state swimming and diving meet in St. Louis. She is the school record holder in diving and was a member of the state-qualifying 200 Free Relay team that broke a school record this season.

A four-year member of the swim and dive team having lettered all four years, Shankland is one of the most decorated female divers in North Kansas City High School history. She has been the MVP of the team each year. She has received all-conference honors for three years, all-state honors for two, and all-American recognition for two.

She is a four-time state qualifier in diving and has received second team all-metro honors in diving for 2007 and 2008. For three years Shankland has been team manager for boys swim and dive teams, and has lettered twice for it.

Shankland is an international baccalaureate diploma candidate, ranking in the top 5 percent of her class, and is senior class president and Bright Flight Scholarship qualifier. She has been a member of student council as a class representative and has served on the school’s executive council three years. Shankland is a member of National Honor Society, has participated in theater and forensics, and has been committee chair of “Relay for Life” for two years. She is a member of the school’s AFS club that hosts foreign exchange students and also volunteers with autistic children.

Shankland has signed a national letter of intent to dive next year on an athletic and academic scholarship with the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Her parents are Richard and Marilyn Shankland of Gladstone.

Keaton Grant led five Boilermakers in double-figures with 17 points. E’Twaun Moore scored 16 points and Jajuan Johnson added 10, both grabbing eight rebounds.

Curtis Jerrells had 27 points and six assists for Baylor, shooting 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. LaceDarius Dunn scored 15 points off of the bench.
